EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, said Sesugh was one of 26 suspected cyber criminals arrested on April 28, 2026 and remanded in custody by a court.

On May 4, Sesugh and two others asked to use the bathroom at the EFCC detention facility. They were granted permission.

When the EFCC operatives moved there, it was allegedly with suspected cult members.

“Upon spotting the team, Sesugh and his alleged cult members opened fire on them. Commission agents returned fire in self-defense,” the statement read.

All the suspects fled during the exchange. Sesugh was later found injured on the roadside and rushed to Police Cottage Hospital at the Makurdi Police Headquarters, where he was pronounced dead.

The EFCC said it immediately reported the incident to the police.

An investigation is underway to determine all the circumstances and arrest the fleeing suspects.

The Commission stressed: “The dead suspect did not die in custody and was never released on bail.”

While expressing solidarity with Sesugh’s family, the EFCC said it will not tolerate attacks on personnel or breaches of security by suspects.
