Energy Minister Adelabu is ready to resign due to gubernatorial ambition

Nigeria’s Energy Minister, Adebayo Adelabu, is expected to resign from his position in the next few days after receiving President Bola Tinubu’s approval to pursue governorship ambition.

The development was disclosed in Abuja by Tunji Bolaji, Special Adviser to the Minister for Strategic Communications and Media Relations.

According to Bolaji, Adelabu recently met with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, where he presented a detailed report on his performance in the energy sector over the past two and a half years.

During the meeting, the president reportedly praised the minister for his efforts in promoting reforms and improving policy direction in the electricity sector.

Bolaji said the timing of the early resignation reflects Adelabu’s intention to stabilize ongoing initiatives before leaving office.

He noted that key outcomes highlighted at the meeting include measures to improve electricity generation, expand transmission infrastructure and improve service delivery along the energy value chain.

A key focus of the presentation was the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP), both designed to guide the long-term development of Nigeria’s power sector.

The NIEP outlines strategies to achieve energy security, expand access to electricity, and integrate renewable energy into the national grid.

Meanwhile, the SIP serves as a roadmap for the implementation of these policies, detailing the timelines, responsibilities and key interventions across generation, transmission and distribution.

Bolaji added that the reform plan also addresses regulatory improvements, investment mobilization and capacity building in the sector.

He recognized current challenges, such as reduced energy production caused by constraints in gas supply, pipeline maintenance and financial obligations to gas suppliers.

Adelabu, according to the statement, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for his support and reiterated his commitment to national development.

His expected resignation marks a significant political move as preparations for future elections begin to take shape.
