EPL: Glasner criticizes referee’s decision to disallow goal against Tottenham

Nottingham Forest manager Oliver Glasner has expressed great frustration after Neco Williams’ potential winning goal in the 0-0 Premier League draw against Tottenham Hotspur at the City Ground was controversially disallowed by VAR.

In the 67th minute, Morgan Gibbs-White shot towards goal, leading to a fight on the goal line where Neco Williams forced the ball over the line.

Referee Craig Pawson initially awarded the goal on the field, but VAR Peter Bankes intervened and disallowed it, ruling that Williams had touched the ball with his arm before it went in.

in a talk with bbcGlasner accused the VAR official of assuming contact had occurred with the arm due to a moving shirt, insisting there was no clear and obvious evidence to overturn the on-field decision.

“It is not clear or obvious. We received information before the season that the VAR threshold should be high again when VAR intervenes and I think it was not clear or obvious.

“For me it is a clear penalty when Neco Williams receives a foul because (Mohammed) Kudus does not even jump to the ball and when this situation occurs anywhere on the field it is always a foul. In these two situations we were not very lucky.

“Both teams fight a lot and, like last year, each game is decided by small margins. I think we had them on our side today, but if there is a disallowed goal in such a close game, we have to take the point.

“It’s not clear or obvious. If the referee gives a handball during the match, I think the VAR should not intervene. You needed four different angles and then you guessed that he probably touched the ball with his arm.

“The VAR should say keep the decision on the field because it is about strengthening the referee. Stick to the decision on the field.

“We had a great chance before the break with Morgan (Gibbs-White) but we didn’t take it, so if we took advantage of the clear chances we had, I think we should have won the game.”
