EPL relegation battle: West Ham out, Spurs in – THIS AGE

By Ayo Kehinde

The race against relegation in the Premiership had a decisive day for West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur as both teams won their matches but with different results.

An injury-time goal from Callum Wilson gave West Ham United a 2-1 victory over Everton at the London Stadium on Saturday, keeping the Hammers out of the English Premier League relegation places on goal difference from Tottenham Hotspur, who defeated relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers elsewhere.

The first half was short on incidents, with Thierno Barry’s speculative long-range attempt the only attempt to trouble either goalkeeper. The second half opens with greater urgency. Crysencio Summerville shot from wide on the left and found Valentin Castellanos, whose close-range effort was blocked by a sharp stop from Jordan Pickford.

West Ham took the lead moments later. Jarrod Bowen’s corner reaches Tomas Soucek at the near post and the Czech midfielder hits the net with a firm header. The hosts managed to survive two shocks before the hour mark, with Axel Disasi clearing off the line after Tim Iroegbunam had gone behind and Soucek inadvertently deflecting Barry’s header onto the crossbar.

Everton equalized with two minutes left in normal time. West Ham struggled to deal with a pass into the box and James Tarkowski nodded the ball to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who hit a volley past Mads Hermansen to level things.

The match was resolved in the 92nd minute. Bowen pulled a shot back wide of goal and Wilson finished from close range, sparking scenes of jubilation among the home support and providing a result that keeps West Ham out of the bottom three.

For Spurs, substitute Joao Palhinha scored eight minutes from time to give the team a 1-0 English Premier League victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, ending a 15-match winless run.

The Portuguese midfielder curled the ball home from inside the six-yard box in the 82nd minute, converting after Richarlison stabbed a Pedro Porro corner into his path, with Matt Doherty inadvertently putting him onside. It was Roberto De Zerbi’s first victory since he took charge of the Club.

The three points, however, do not remove Spurs from danger. West Ham United scored late to beat Everton 2-1, leaving Tottenham in 18th place, two points below the safe line with four games remaining.

The afternoon was dark for the hosts. Knee injuries forced both Dominic Solanke and Xavi Simons out of the game, and goalkeeper Jose Sa was not seriously tested until the 69th minute, when he parried Rodrigo Bentancur’s powerful header. Simons had already wasted a good opportunity before his departure.

Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky secured the result, producing a fine save from Joao Gomes’ free-kick from the top right corner in the 98th minute. Wolves, whose relegation to the Championship was confirmed earlier in the week, remain at the bottom of the table.
