For every generation, vaccines work and have saved more than 150 million lives: WHO

During World Immunization Weekwhich took place from April 24 to 30, the World Health Organization (WHO) and partners are highlighting the benefits of vaccines at every stage of lifeas well as scientific breakthroughs that have resulted in tried and tested inoculations against contracting malaria, HPV, cholera, dengue fever, meningitis, RSV, Ebola and mpox.

This year marks the midpoint of the 2030 Immunization Agenda, a global push led by WHO to ensure that everyone can benefit from life-saving vaccines. A report released to assess progress made so far, found that, despite unprecedented challenges – including the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical instability, climate disruption and limited funding – immunization efforts over the past five years have succeeded in preventing millions of deaths.

However, most of the targets are still off coursewith persistent gaps in routine coverage, equity and outbreak prevention in many countries.

The UN health agency called for it new commitment to building more sustainable national programs, stronger integration with primary health services, and more prioritization from global health institutions and partners.

Great results for children

On Friday, WHO, along with the UN children’s agency (UNICEF) and the Vaccine Alliance (GAVI), announced this The Grand Chasea historic international effort to address the decline in vaccinations caused in large part by the COVID-19 pandemic, has reached approximately 18.3 million children aged one to five years in 36 countriessince its launch in 2023.

The campaign also provided 23 million doses of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) to unvaccinated and undervaccinated children, an important intervention towards eradicating polio. The initiative is it is estimated to be on track to meet its target of vaccinating at least 21 million children.
