Former Kano governor, Shekarau, dumps PDP, joins APC

Former governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The former governor who announced this in Kano on Sunday, revealed that he has joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a resignation letter dated April 19, 2026 addressed to the PDP Chairman Giginyu Area in Nasarawa Local Government Area of ​​Kano State, Shekarau announced that his resignation would take effect immediately.

“Please accept this letter as notification of my resignation from my position as a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today,” he wrote.

The former minister said that the decision was taken after extensive consultations within his political camp, which indicated a move to another party in the near future.

“This decision follows extensive and deep deliberations within my political group, to pursue our political careers in other political parties,” said Shekarau.

While giving his appreciation to the party leadership at the sub-district level, he added, “I thank you for being a good leader, and pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your management.”

The letter was also copied to the Kano State PDP Chairman and Nassarawa Local Government Area PDP Chairman, indicating an official notification between party structures.

Shekarau who did not officially state the platform he would join, however stated that he would be in line with Governor Yusuf’s “Kano First Agenda”, which was an indication that he might join the APC.

He said the Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, visited him at his residence in Kano earlier this month about joining the APC.

Governor Abba Yusuf, however, has welcomed Shekarau to the APC, and described Shekarau’s entry as a major boost to the party’s strength in the state.

A statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, explained that a date would soon be set, in consultation with the party’s national secretariat, for the former governor’s formal acceptance into the APC.
