Frank Onyeka’s Impact Is Seen In Coventry’s Successful Rise To The English Premier League

The arrival of Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka to Coventry City has been cited as a huge factor in the club’s successful bid for promotion to the English Premier League, which was confirmed in dramatic fashion on Friday.

Sports247 reports that Onyeka was in action on Friday and helped his team to a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers that kept them well ahead of any other team in the promotion race, with only one formality in the final match to cement their progress.

While Ryan Alebiosu was at Blackburn throughout, Onyeka received a yellow card in the 51st minute and was replaced after suffering an injury in the 62nd minute, as the match at Ewood Park grew in intensity.

Onyeka and his friends are just hoping to see Middlesbrough beat Ipswich Town on Sunday lunchtime, which would mean defeating Portsmouth at the CBS Arena on Tuesday night would seal the title for Coventry at home.

While many critics criticized Onyeka for opting for a lower-tier English Championship team earlier this year, the star’s daring loan move from top-flight side Brentford has paid off.

Such is the former FC Ebedie de Sagamu and Denmark FC Midtjylland midfielder, who was born in Asaba, Delta State but grew up in Lagos, has become a hero among the Coventry faithful for being part of their historic resurgence.

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, Coventry’s manager, has received much praise for securing the club’s return to England’s top flight after 25 years, a total of 9,113 days, since they were relegated.

They plummeted into the Championship after a 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa on 5 May 2001 but, after spending 11 years there, were relegated to League One and fell into administration in 2013.

Returning to the top was a distant dream amid the drama of two grounds shared with Northampton and Birmingham, hated ownership, multiple protests and parliamentary mentions, but they defied the odds to stage a bold resurrection.

A BBC Sport report adds in part: “Sources acknowledge there was cautious optimism at the start of the season, but they did not expect such success so quickly. The foundations were laid during pre-season.

“Goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, who joined on loan from Brighton, has had the biggest impact but the team is largely the same as last season despite the mid-season loan signings of Romain Esse and Frank Onyeka.

“Lampard has the aura of a player who has won everything. His influence convinced players to join Coventry when they had other options. Lampard’s calming influence was crucial in his first summer with the group (since) November 2024.”
