Switzerland, Canada qualify for World Cup knockout stages

Switzerland beat World Cup hosts Canada 2-1 in their final group game on Wednesday night to seal top spot in Group B.

Switzerland and Canada automatically advance to the first knockout round as group winners and runners-up.

Goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi in the first 12 minutes of the second half in Vancouver were enough to take top spot.

Switzerland along with Argentina and France are the only countries to have qualified for the knockout stages at the last four World Cups.

In the other group match played simultaneously, Bosnia Herzegovina beat Qatar 3-1 to keep hopes alive of qualifying.

The result means Bosnia automatically qualify for the last 32, but can still qualify as one of the eight best third-placed teams in the tournament.
