The power of sports to foster international relations and community development was fully demonstrated this week when the Moses Simon Foundation hosted its latest football tournament with the support of the French Embassy in Nigeria.
The event was attended by the representative of the French Embassy in Nigeria, Ketty Regis, who highlighted the initiative as a model of “sports diplomacy.” Emphasizing the universal language of the game, the Embassy representative noted in Hausa: “Wasanni na haɗa mu”: sport unites us.
Nigerian international Moses Simon, a celebrated figure in French professional football, was praised for his dual role as a high-performance athlete and dedicated philanthropist.
“In France he represents the talent, determination and excellence of Nigerian football. In Nigeria, through his Foundation, he uses his experience and influence to support young people,” Regis said.
A key theme of this year’s tournament was the urgent need for gender inclusion in sports. The Embassy stressed that the advancement of women’s football is not simply a matter of justice, but a vital investment in the leadership and confidence of the next generation.
“All girls should have the opportunity to train, compete and develop their talent in a safe and supportive environment,” said the representative, offering a direct message to the athletes in attendance: “Your talent matters, your ambition matters and your place is on the field.”
As the partnership between the Moses Simon Foundation and the French Embassy continues to evolve, the focus remains clear: harness the transformative power of football to deepen the friendship between France and Nigeria while creating tangible opportunities for young people.
