From Naija to the world: Monaco’s social media account goes crazy after 17-year-old Nigerian’s debut goal

Newly signed 17-year-old striker George Ilenikhena opened his scoring account for Ligue 1 side Monaco on his unofficial debut for the team in their 3-1 pre-season win over Dutch side Feyenoord, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Newly joined from Belgian top-flight club Antwerp, Ilenikhena, who holds French and Nigerian citizenship, earned a move to the principality side after scoring 14 goals in 50 games last season.

He proved that number is no fluke when he opened the scoring in the 25th minute to propel the team to a big, morale-boosting win ahead of the start of the new season in France.

His goal was celebrated on the team’s social media with a caption that reads (Naija (Nigeria) to the world). Acknowledging his Nigerian roots as he was born in Lagos before moving to France at a very young age.

Ilenikhena’s international future will likely be decided in the coming years, as both countries will no doubt have him on their radar if, as expected, he continues his run of form in front of goal.
