The Niger Tornadoes extended their unbeaten run to three matches after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City in their matchday nine Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) fixture at the Bako Kontagora Stadium, Minna.

Goals in both halves from sensations Nafiu Obalowu and Bashir Musa ensured Ikon Allah Boys maximum points despite a late scare from the visitors.

The meeting began on a cautious note, with both sides cautiously probing for openings and trying to establish control. However, the Tornadoes gradually grew into the competition, creating several scoring opportunities but failing to convert their early chances.

The turning point finally came midway through the first half when the hosts took advantage of a defensive error in Ikorodu City’s backline. Wasiu Jimoh reacted quickly to the situation, setting up Nafiu Obalowu, who calmly slotted home to give Ikon Allah Boys a deserved lead.

Ikorodu City posed no offensive threat before the break, with goalkeeper Derrick Julu comfortably handling the few attempts that came his way.

Determined to maintain their offensive momentum, the Tornadoes introduced the fast and enterprising Joseph Bulus shortly after the restart. The winger wasted no time in making his presence felt, troubling the away defense with his footwork, speed and intelligent movement.

With the hosts pushing for a second goal to overcome their opponents, the technical team further strengthened their attack with the introduction of Daniel Hussaini and Bashir Musa.

The tactical adjustments finally paid off in the 82nd minute, when Bashir Musa reacted quicker to a rebound after Ikorodu City goalkeeper Michael Atata had saved an initial shot, firing home to double the Tornadoes’ lead.

Just when the home fans looked ready to celebrate a comfortable victory, Ikorodu City pulled a goal back in the second minute of injury time. Ayinde Basit’s shot slipped through goalkeeper Derrick Julu’s fingers and into the net.

However, Ikon Allah Boys held on to secure a vital win and extend their unbeaten run to three matches.

The result lifts the Niger Tornadoes from 15th to 11th position in the NPFL table and will travel next to Aba for a matchday 10 match against Abia Warriors.
