Belief and perseverance have striking similarities. Once you are convinced of a particular struggle, you tenaciously develop a strong will for perseverance to enable you to remain steadfast and focused on your dream or aspiration.
Global history is full of men and women who, through perseverance, succeeded in their core beliefs. Martin Luther’s perseverance and belief in freedom, fairness, justice, and fairness helped his dream come true.
Winston Churchill was convinced that appeasing Adolf Hitler would be both horrendous and horrible, so he persevered and waited for the right opportunity before dealing a devastating blow to the warmongering German who, in his opinion, had never had any good intentions for world peace and stability. Churchill had perseverance and conviction.
At the same time, Mahatma Gandhi of India, Nelson Mandela of South Africa and Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana certainly understood the true essence of these twin virtues called conviction and perseverance and all three men imbibed these powerful elements of nature.
Gandhi was convinced of what he called a peaceful, non-violent protest against the British colonial masters and it worked wonders. Both Mandela and Nkrumah were jailed at different times.
However, through perseverance and belief in what they believed in – constitutional democracy for Africa through the popular vote – these two men separately achieved their dreams: Ghana became independent and South Africa was freed from the shackles of apartheid; and subsequently Nkrumah and Mandela were president and prime minister of their respective countries.
For 22 years, Arsenal have been convinced they can win the English Premier League title. They came close to winning the EPL title on several occasions, but failed in many attempts
And since 2005 the Gunners have been fighting to qualify for the UEFA Champions League final again without success. However, they persevered and were convinced that sooner or later they would achieve that goal.
Today Arsenal are champions of England and will also play the UCL final on May 30 against PSG. This is the payoff of perseverance and belief. Arsenal, in dramatic fashion, demonstrated that belief and perseverance built on hard work, diligence and ability will surely produce the desired results. Arsenal had belief, they persevered and they got results.
This brings this address to His Excellency, The Rt. Honorable Emeka Ihedioha’s political beliefs and his perseverance in the face of difficulties and challenges, particularly as the 2027 general elections are around the corner.
After 12 years of successful and rewarding expedition as a national legislator which led to his emergence as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ihedioha, a strong Arsenal supporter, contested the governorship of Imo State.
As fate would have it, as Arsenal for the last 22 seasons, they lost bravely to the incumbent governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha. Like Arsenal, Ihedioha kept hope alive. He returned to his base and revived his political structure which ultimately became bigger, better and stronger.
Convinced of his dream and aspiration to become governor, Ihedioha persevered. He worked harder while remaining focused and upholding his principles embodied in character, courage, ability and competence.
Therefore, Ihedioha, after dutifully eliminating all obstacles that prevented him from winning in 2015, was ready for the 2019 Imo State governorship election – he won. Unfortunately, after seven months in office, he was controversially dismissed by the Supreme Court.
Being a man of attention to detail, due process and procedures, Ihedioha has, since 2020, when he left office, worked assiduously with his eyes and mind focused on the 2027 elections.
Of course, as Arsenal’s victory in the Premier League after two decades and two demonstrated, Ihedioha, a politician whose strength is vision, planning and results, will still break through in 2027.
Any man who believes in belief and practices perseverance is usually resilient. It is usually difficult to convince him otherwise, especially when the points are weak and weak.
The lesson is: respect a convinced and persevering man. They know their onions. Like Arsenal, they are focused, dedicated, disciplined and determined. Also, they are consistent, they don’t jump around. And Ihedioha is one of them.
