I’m Nigerian: Hellas Verona defender talks about Super Eagles possibility

Hellas Verona defender Daniel Oyegoke spoke about the possibility of playing for Nigeria’s senior team, despite having represented England at different youth levels.

Born in England to parents of Nigerian descent, the 23-year-old began his Arsenal career with loan spells at Brentford and MK Dons, but failed to break into the senior team, leading to his departure to Scottish side Hearts in 2024.

A year later, he was signed by Hellas Verona of the Italian Serie A and has since become a full member of the Italian league team. An injury setback reduced his number of games to just 15 this season.

Now back to full fitness and aiming for his third season, his international future has become a topic of debate as Nigeria’s head coach is actively recruiting players with dual nationality.

“Yes, I am a Nigerian and that means being eligible to play in Nigeria. One of the most footballing countries in the world,” he told OwnGoalNigeria.com in a private chat on social media.

A source close to Chelle revealed that they are aware of his availability and tried to get him in the AFCON squad before he unfortunately got injured. However, he remained silent on whether they will lobby for him again.
