….Helicopters, SEAL Team 6 among the forces deployed in operation
…Armed forces recover devices linked to terrorist financing network

It was supposed to be a quiet night over the Lake Chad Basin, but within minutes the darkness exploded in a coordinated storm of rotor blades, gunfire and precision strikes.
In a rare joint military operation that extends across international lines of command, Nigerian and U.S. special forces battled ISIS fighters for more than three hours, culminating in the death of a top jihadist commander whose networks had long destabilized security agencies across Africa.
… A raid that has been in the making for years
Emerging details have revealed that the elimination of ISIS deputy leader Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki was not a spontaneous encounter but a carefully planned helicopter assault involving elite special operations units from Nigeria and the United States.
According to military sources cited in international reports, the mission has deployed about two dozen commandos, including agents linked to the US Navy’s SEAL Team 6, to the unstable islands scattered across the Lake Chad basin, a known stronghold of jihadist activity.
The objective was clear: capture Al-Minuki alive. But the operation took a dramatic turn.
… Fire, fury, a change in tactics
The assault reportedly began at night, with helicopters inserting troops near suspected militant positions. What followed was an intense firefight lasting more than three hours between the joint task force and about three dozen ISIS fighters.
Security officials revealed that Al-Minuki initially resisted capture, forcing commanders to review the mission’s rules of engagement. Rather than risk a breakout or escape into the basin’s labyrinthine islands, U.S. forces authorized a targeted airstrike on his compound.
He was killed in the strike along with several of his lieutenants.
No casualties were recorded among Nigerian or US forces – a detail that military analysts describe as a rare operational success in such a high-risk environment.
…Inside the Lake Chad war zone
The operation took place within the broader Lake Chad region, a vast and porous water system shared by Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon. The area has long become the scene of insurrections involving factions linked to ISIS and other jihadist groups.
In recent years, Lake Chad has evolved into a complex battlefield where armed groups exploit islands, waterways and swamps to evade conventional military pursuit.
Officials said Al-Minuki and his fighters had established a fortified presence on two small islands, using the terrain as both a shield and an escape route.
…Global intelligence footprint
The mission, beyond its kinetic success, is now seen as an intelligence godsend. Electronic devices recovered from the site, including cell phones, laptops and encrypted storage systems, are subjected to forensic analysis.
Security sources say the materials could reveal recruitment channels, financial networks and operational strategies of ISIS cells operating across Africa and potentially beyond.
For intelligence agencies, the raid was not just aimed at neutralizing a commander; it was about dismantling a node in a broader global terrorist architecture linked to ISIS
….Political reactions, strategic signals
The operation has already sparked strong political reactions at the highest levels.
Former US President Donald Trump announced the militant leader’s death, describing the mission as a “complex operation” involving US and Nigerian forces.
On the Nigerian side, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu confirmed the incident, underlining that “several lieutenants” of the ISIS commander were also eliminated. It also signaled that more “decisive attacks” could follow as part of ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
Military analysts interpret the joint operation as a strong indicator of deepening defense cooperation between Abuja and Washington in the Lake Chad theater.
What Al-Minuki represented
Before his death, Al-Minuki had been designated by US authorities as a specially designated global terrorist, with a long history in jihadist operations spanning financial coordination, propaganda networks and transnational communication channels.
Its rise within ISIS structures has made it a key operational bridge between regional insurgencies and global extremist financing systems.
Security experts say his elimination could temporarily disrupt coordination between ISIS-linked factions, although they warn that such groups often quickly regenerate leadership.
…The road ahead
Despite the mission’s success, defense officials acknowledge that the Lake Chad Basin remains unstable. The terrain, combined with the cross-border mobility of rebels, continues to challenge conventional military dominance.
However, the three-hour operation marks one of the most coordinated US-Nigeria counterterrorism attacks in recent years, combining airpower, special forces precision and intelligence-driven targeting.
For now, military authorities are poring over digital evidence recovered from the battlefield, hoping it could unlock further breakthroughs in the region’s long war against extremism.
What is clear is that the Lake Chad war front is entering a new phase, defined not just by firefights, but by intelligence warfare, surgical strikes and increasingly internationalized military cooperation.
