An athletic coach has been released from the abuse of the son of the Jakob Ingrigtsen Olympiad gold medalist – in a high profile trial that gripped Norwegian.

Gjert Ingebrigtsen, 59, was found guilty of one charge of a minor attack against his daughter Ingrid, 19, and will avoid prison after receiving a sentence of being deferred 15 days.

He was ordered to pay around £ 730 as compensation after being punished for hitting him with a wet towel.

During the trial, the 24 -year -old Jakob Ingrigtsen – who won gold in 5,000 m in the Paris Games and 1,500m in Tokyo – claimed his childhood was damaged by fear and manipulation.

The prosecutor has been looking for a two and a half year prison sentences for the defendant, who was accused of allegedly the domestic harassment campaign for years against Jakob and his younger sister.

Gjert Ingebrigtsen said he was innocent, telling the court that he had become an too protective father who tried to help his ambitious children.

His lawyer said the verdict means “there is no evidence to show that he created a continuous fear of his children”.

One member of his legal team Heidi Reisvang added: “There is no winner in this case. He hopes that one day he will have contact and relationship with his family again.”

This family became famous in the Norwegian media through the Documentary TV Team Ingrigtsen series, which took place from 2016 to 2021.

It showed that the father trained his three sons Jakob, Filip and Henrik, all of which were involved in the track-and-lap.

But in 2022, the three of them separated and the following year they signed the newspaper column who accused him of committing physical violence and intimidation, which caused police investigation.

A spokesperson said that Inebrigtsen was “relieved” by the decision, but it was unclear whether the prosecution planned to file an appeal.

Meanwhile, a lawyer representing Jakob and Ingrid said they were happy that the court believed several elements of this case.

The trial, which lasted for almost two months, heard from the list of long witnesses – including family members, sports officials and other athletes.

Ingebrigtsen now trains Narve Gilje Nordas, Jakob’s rival at 1,500m.
