Kwankwaso revealed a one-term written agreement with Obi, saying North Korea would return to the presidency in 2031

The vice presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has revealed that he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed a written agreement requiring the former governor of Anambra State to serve only one four-year term if they win the 2027 presidential election.

Kwankwaso, who made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, said the agreement was part of a broader political understanding designed to ensure that the presidency returns to North Korea after one term.

Speaking on Obi’s commitment to relinquish power after four years, the former governor of Kano State expressed confidence that the NDC presidential candidate would honor the agreement.

“Oh yes, I personally believe him and… I think, based on what I know now about him… he will change his mind when the time comes, and we are all gentlemen, even though we have accepted to put it on paper,” he said.

Confirming that the understanding had been officially documented, Kwankwaso said both the party and the two candidates had implemented separate agreements.

“We’ve done one for a party, and we’ve done another one between the two of us,” he said.

He explained that the agreement stipulated the formation of a united political front for four years of government before power moved back to the north.

“The agreement is what you said, that after four years… we will work together, work together as a group, as a party, as friends, brothers and so on… so that after his term, or our term, of four years, 2027 to 2031, then they return to the North, and that is the general agreement,” Kwankwaso said.

The former presidential candidate of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) also explained why he agreed to be Obi’s running mate after he himself previously held the highest office in the country.

According to him, the two leaders concluded that allowing South Korea to produce a one-term president would encourage national unity and strengthen the country’s political balance.

“Together we feel that the presidency should be held by the South for four years, after which it will be held again by the North. We believe that this must be the consensus of everyone in this country so that we can move together as a family, both North and South,” he said.

When asked whether he intended to run for president when the proposed four-year system ends in 2031, Kwankwaso declined to make any commitments, saying his party’s main focus was on the 2027 elections while keeping its long-term political vision intact.

“We have short-term plans that we are implementing now and, of course, we also have medium and long-term plans for the country, and that is what we are working on now,” he said.

Obi first announced his intention to serve only one term in a public meeting in May, arguing that a single term would provide the political stability needed to reorganize the country.

At that time, he stated: “I want to be a one-term president because of stability. I will not stay a day, with a gun to my head, longer than four years.”

Kwankwaso’s latest disclosure now confirms that the one-term commitment is not just a public promise but also part of a written political agreement between the NDC leadership and its presidential and vice-presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
