Lamido urges PDP candidates to avoid personal attacks and focus on issues ahead of 2027 polls

Former Jigawa State governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sule Lamido, has urged aspirants and candidates preparing for the 2027 general elections to run issue-based campaigns, warning against personal attacks and bitter politics.

Lamido said political actors should focus on presenting practical solutions to Nigeria’s pressing challenges rather than engaging in defamation.

The elder statesman spoke while receiving PDP governorship candidates from Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Yobe states on Saturday at his residence in Bamaina, Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

He underlined that the country’s current socioeconomic and security challenges require mature political commitment capable of promoting national unity and development.

“We want to redirect and restore the culture of politics in terms of issues, not personalities,” Lamido said.

“We must know that we are all Nigerians. We are citizens of this country and we all love Nigeria. It is not about what someone has done; it is about what you will offer Nigerians as an individual or a political party.”

According to him, the 2027 election campaigns should revolve around crucial national issues, including insecurity, economy, education and corruption.

“These are the issues we should campaign on so that when we eventually form the government, it will truly be a government of the people,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, PDP governorship candidate in Gombe State and former communications minister, Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, said the visit was to seek Lamido’s guidance and support ahead of the 2027 elections.

Pantami described the former governor as a principled political leader who had consistently demonstrated courage and commitment to the national interest.

“Nigeria and Nigerians need leaders like Sule Lamido who stand with the masses and have the courage to speak the truth to anyone, regardless of their position or status,” Pantami said.

The visit comes as political parties and aspiring candidates step up consultations and strategic engagements ahead of the 2027 general elections, with debates on governance, economic reforms and national security expected to dominate the election season.
