The state government of Ogun has announced the outbreak of the Lassa fever in the state, with the confirmation of the death of a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The state commissioner of Ogun for health, dr. Tomi Coker, announced it in a statement on Wednesday 26 March 2025.

Coker said that the case index in the state of Ogun is a 25 -year -old NYSC member who got sick while he was in the wave state.

The commissioner said that the body member was subsequently brought to a secondary health facility in the area of ​​the local government of Ijebu-North of the State of Ogun on March 18 and subsequently died on the same day.

He described the Lassa fever as a viral hemorrhagic disease that causes high degree fever, headache, weakness of the general body and sore throat.

“Other symptoms may include muscle pain, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chest pain and inexplicable bleeding from ears, eyes, nose, mouth and other body openings,” said Coker.

Coker has urged the residents of the Ogun state to promptly report to the hospital if they noticed one of these symptoms, just as he recommended to all health structures to intensify the prevention and control measures of infections.

The commissioner added: “Any case of feverish disease that has not responded to the use of 48 hours of anti-malaria or antibiotics should be raised as a suspicion index for the lassa fever.

“We implore all the health facilities of Ogun, public and private, to intensify the prevention and control measures of infections and encourage compliance by all the staff of the healthcare facilities.

“Healthcare workers who suspect the lassa fever in a patient are advised to call their surveillance officer and notification of local government diseases (LGA DSNO) whose number are placed in our health facilities.

“They can also call the surveillance and notification official of state diseases (0703-421-4893) or state epidemiologist (0808-425-0881).

“The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the rapid response team of Ijebu North East is maintaining the situation under control with greater surveillance, commitment and mobilization of the community for an effective response.”

Coker also reiterated the dedication of the state government of Ogun to the protection of the health of its citizens through continuous surveillance and a rapid response to infectious diseases.
