Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has warned newly sworn in local government chairmen that their political future will depend on their performance and ability to present their advice to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the coming elections.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of the presidents and vice presidents at the Abakaliki Ecumenical Centre, the governor charged them to diligently serve the residents, uphold the constitution and justify the trust reposed in them by the people and the party.
The newly sworn in presidents are Mrs. Peace Agwu (Ishielu), Hon. Paul Ituma (Ohaukwu), Friday Nwuhuo (Ezza North), Chinedu Mkpuma (Ezza South), Hon Chidi Nwode (Ikwo), Eng Timothy Nwachi (Afikpo), Ikechukwu Ogbofia (Onicha), Michael Kalu Anyim (Ivo), Chief Simeon Onuoha (Edda), Mrs Helen Aduga (Izzi), Hon Chidiebere Alo (Abakaliki) and the Hon. Chibueze Odigwe (Ebony).
Nwifuru said any president who failed to hand over his local government area to the APC would be removed, stressing that the party expected victory in all available National Assembly seats in the state.
“We will remove a council president who did not win his local government,” he said.
The governor urged chairmen to return to their councils, mobilize grassroots support for the APC and resist opposition attempts to weaken the party.
He warned that poor performance, misconduct and a damaged public image could end presidents’ political careers and make it difficult for any party to support them in future elections.
“Your actions, your behavior and your attitude are what people look at,” he said, reminding them that local government leaders are constantly under public scrutiny.
The governor also urged officials to reconcile with former opponents, engage political stakeholders in the APC and avoid inheriting conflicts belonging to others.
“Never inherit anyone’s enemy. My enemy should not be your enemy. Reconcile with them,” he said.
He congratulated the new council officials and urged them to combine effective governance with political accountability at the start of their mandate.
