LEADERSHIP CRISIS: Tinubu aide Onanuga lashes out at Obi for hinting he might dump ADC

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has slammed former Labor Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, describing him as the most opportunistic and inconsistent politician in Nigerian history.

Onanuga’s comments came after Obi hinted in an interview on Arise TV that he would leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) if the party’s internal processes were disrupted.

Speaking in an interview broadcast on Monday, Obi had indicated that he might leave the party if its internal processes were disrupted.

He defended his history of switching between political parties, insisting that his decisions were always guided by principle, not convenience.

Responding to criticism that he often quit the party instead of fixing internal problems, Obi said his past departures were driven by a refusal to participate in a flawed or unethical system.

“I moved from APGA to PDP because I had problems with my successor, the governor who came after me. I will not let that become toxic and damage the governance of his country. I moved,” he said.

He added that his departure from the People’s Democratic Party was due to irregularities in its internal processes.

“In the PDP, I told you earlier, people don’t play by the rules, it’s transactional, I can’t be part of a transactional primary, I can’t pay people to serve them, so I moved to the Labor Party,” said Obi.

The former governor of Anambra State also accused the ruling party and the Federal Government of masterminding the crisis that led to his decision to leave the Labor Party, citing delay in recognizing the Supreme Court judgment.

“In the Labor Party, the Supreme Court ruled against it in April, INEC did not recognize it until January 7, eight months later,” he said, adding that there were attempts to trap him in a dysfunctional system.

“They thought I would be there for the fire to burn me. When I ran away, they will now say Peter Obi couldn’t stay to put out the fire they started and then I’m gone,” he added.

On his current position at ADC, Obi said he remained committed but warned that he would not hesitate to act if similar issues arose.

“I am in the ADC with the same people, some of whom I left in the PDP and other parties, but we are going through the same process, if the process is compromised again, I will speak up.” he said.

Obi emphasized that integrity in the political process is non-negotiable for him, and said, “If I had to move twenty times, I would. You can’t use yesterday’s process to build tomorrow. You can’t use yesterday’s process to build tomorrow.”

He also stated that he had never been involved in electoral malpractice or influenced judicial outcomes.

“I have never been involved in any form of cheating. I have never been a part of paying people in court or anywhere else to give me judgment that I don’t deserve,” he said.
