Lebanese Islamist militant commander killed in Israeli drone strike

A drone strike by Israeli forces has killed a commander of the Lebanese Islamist group al-Jamaa al-Islamiya (Islamic Assembly), in the east of the country.

Security sources told reporters that Muhammad Hamid Jabara from the town of Qaraoun was killed at 06:30 local time (03:30 GMT) on Thursday in an attack targeting his truck.

In June, the Israeli army said it had killed Ayman Ratma, who was responsible for supplying weapons to the Palestinian militant groups Hamas and al-Jamaa al-Islamiya in eastern Lebanon.

The militant group initially did not comment.

The organization is close to Hezbollah and Hamas and claims to support the Shiite militia Hezbollah’s struggle against Israel.

Since the beginning of the Gaza war, there have been daily military confrontations between the Israeli army and pro-Iranian Hezbollah and other groups in Lebanon.
