Liberia–India Trade Hits $390M Amid Export Boom

Monrovia, Liberia, June 5, 2026 – Liberia’s trade with India has recorded a significant rise, with official data from India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry confirming that bilateral trade between the two countries reached US$390.06 million in 2025–2026, further cementing India’s position as one of Liberia’s key economic partners.

The figures, drawn from India’s trade statistics, reflect a story of steady growth, deepening cooperation, and a notable surge in Liberian exports that many see as a milestone worth highlighting.

A review of the five-year India–Liberia trade performance shows a relationship that has strengthened consistently, even amid global economic disruptions.

A key highlight of the latest data is the near-tripling of Liberian exports to India, rising from US$20.39 million in 2024–2025 to US$44.91 million in 2025–2026, an increase of more than 120 percent.

This growth is partly linked to India’s Duty-Free Tariff Preference (DFTP) Scheme, introduced in 2012, under which Liberia benefits from zero-duty access to over 98 percent of India’s tariff lines. The initiative is widely regarded as part of India’s broader South–South cooperation framework.

Across Liberia, the footprint of Indian goods and investment is increasingly visible. From Bajaj two-wheelers and three-wheelers, to TVS autos and Hero motorcycles, Indian vehicles are a common sight on roads in Monrovia and across county towns.

A growing distribution network for Sonalika tractors, an Indian agricultural machinery brand, has also taken root in Monrovia, supporting agricultural productivity and smallholder farmers.

Beyond consumer goods, the Indian business community in Liberia continues to play a significant role in investment and enterprise development. Indian firms are active in manufacturing, retail, and mining, contributing to job creation and strengthening supply chains that link local producers to regional and global markets.

India established its resident mission in Monrovia in 2021, a development that significantly deepened diplomatic engagement. In December 2024, the two countries held their first Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in Monrovia, co-chaired by India’s Additional Secretary for the Ministry of External Affairs and Liberia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Madam Sara Beysolow Nyanti.

The consultations covered key sectors including trade, investment, mining, agriculture, health, pharmaceuticals, education, and people-to-people exchanges.

High-level engagement has further reinforced the relationship, including Liberia’s Vice President, Jeremiah Kpan Koung, participating in the 19th CII India–Africa Business Conclave in New Delhi.

International Big Cat Alliance membership and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in pharmacopeia have also strengthened collaboration in public health, pharmaceutical regulation, and quality assurance, including the recognition of the Indian Pharmacopeia as a reference standard.

With total bilateral trade exceeding US$390 million and Liberian exports more than doubling within a year, analysts suggest the partnership is positioned to reach the half-billion-dollar mark within the next two to three years.
