The United Nations Convention to fight desertification (Uncd) has made great strides in facing the urgent issues of degradation of the territory, desertification and drought. Helen Oji reports

The United Nations Convention to fight the parts of desertification (UNCD) has decided to make a sustainable management, restoration and conservation of the vast ecosystems of Rangeland. Ecosystems cover half the earth’s surface of the Earth and are the use of dominant land in the dry lands of the world but have been neglected and there are quickly disappearing rain forests.

Reduce productivity

The degradation of the land threatens a sixth of global food supplies, potentially exhausting a third of the terrestrial carbon reserves. About two billion people who live in pastoral areas are among the most vulnerable in the world in the face of desertification, the degradation of the territory and drought. The drought and loss of earth will have terrible consequences for the climate, biodiversity and the sustenance of people, as well as for companies, large and small. The global economy could lose 23 trillion dollars by 2050 through degradation, with the Warning of the UNCD that stopping this trend would cost about $ 4.6 trillion, a fraction of the expected losses.

According to the United Nations, drought has increased by almost 30 % in frequency and intensity since 2000, threatening agriculture and water safety, while up to 40 % of the world land is degraded, which means that its organic productivity or economic has been reduced.

In particular, the Conference of the United Nations Terre of the Nations has also agreed on the creation of a Caucus for indigenous populations and a Caucus for local communities to ensure that their unique perspectives and challenges are adequately represented; a continuation of the scientific interface of the Convention to strengthen the decision -based decision -based process; and the mobilization of the commitment of the private sector in the field of business lands Initiative.

The UNCD estimates that at least $ 2.6 trillion of total investments are needed by 2030 to restore more than a billion hectares of degraded land and build resilience to drought. This is equivalent to $ 1 billion of daily investments between today and 2030 to achieve global soil restoration objectives and desertification and drought to be fought.

New commitments have been announced for the restoration of large -scale land and drought preparation, such as the resilience of the global drought of Riyadh, which attracted 12.15 billion dollars to support 80 of the most vulnerable countries in the world in construction of their resilience, including a shit of $ 10 billion by $ 10 billion Arab coordination group.

Restoration

The Great Green Wall (GGW), an initiative led by Africa to restore 100 million hectares of degraded land, has also mobilized 11 million EUR by the Italian government for the restoration of the landscape in the Sahel and 3.6 million euros from Austrian government to strengthen the coordination and implementation of the initiative in 22 African countries. The unit is part of the GGW accelerator, an effort supported by the UNCD to reach ambitions for a greenest and most prosperous Sahel.

Almost 200 countries have convened the sixteenth conference of the parties (COP16) to the UNCD have committed themselves to priority to restore soil and resilience to drought in national policies and international cooperation as an essential strategy for food safety and the Climate adaptation.

Nations have also made significant progress in laying the foundations for a future global drought regime, which intend to complete the COP17. In addition, over 12 billion dollars have been busy facing desertification, degradation of the ground and drought all over the world, especially in the most vulnerable countries.

The “Sacra Terra” declaration presented during the forum of indigenous peoples inaugural in an UNCD policeman, underlined the role of indigenous populations in the sustainable management of resources and asked for greater involvement in the global governance of land and drought, also through the participation in land restoration efforts.

The representative of the indigenous Oliver Tester from Australia said that “we can’t wait to support our commitment to protect Mother Earth through a dedicated Caucus and leave this space confiding that our voices are listened to”.

Defense

The greatest youth participation to date, based on the strategy of involvement of the UNCD young people who try to give young people a more important role in negotiations on earth and drought and on action and provide technical and financial support to the initiatives led by young.

On the gender front, the countries underlined the need to pay particular attention to all forms of discrimination faced by women and girls during the design and implementation of policies and programs relating to degradation and drought of the territory.

In recognition of the important role of the private sector, which currently contributes only to 6% of funding for the restoration of the earth and the resilience of drought, the parties have imposed the UNCD secretariat and the global mechanism to mobilize the commitment of the sector private pursuant to the pelvis terrain initiative.

The decision underlined the critical role of the defense of the private sector, environmental, social and governance strategies (ESG) and sustainable funding in facing desertification, degradation of the territory and the challenges of the drought (DLDD). The decision comes after the Business Land Forum, which brought together the largest number of participants in the private sector in an UNCD policeman, over 400 from industries such as finance, fashion, agricultural and pharmaceutical foods.

Recognizing the role of science as a basis for solid policies, the parties agreed on the continuation of the scientific interface of the UNCD (SPI) policy, which was created at COP11 in 2013 to translate scientific results into recommendations for decision makers.

For example, the SPI presented definitive evidence that the three quarters of the earth’s surface without ice have become permanently drier in the last 30 years, with five billion people expected in the dry lands by 2100, showing the urgency to act.
