Industrial action by Lufthansa staff has disrupted international flights, leaving several Nigerian passengers stranded and forcing some to spend the night in European airports.
The disruption, caused by strikes involving pilots and cabin crew, affected major German hubs, including Frankfurt and Munich, where hundreds of flights were canceled and operations were severely curtailed.
At Frankfurt Airport, some travelers to Nigeria were left with no choice but to sleep at night after their flights were canceled or delayed.
Passengers were later rebooked on alternative airlines such as Royal Air Maroc, but many complained of poor communication and further delays, with some flights postponed due to technical problems.
The strike, which took place in April 2026, was led by aviation unions representing cabin crew and pilots, who are demanding higher wages, better pensions and better working conditions in the context of ongoing restructuring within the Lufthansa Group.
Talks between the unions and the airline’s management had broken down before the strike, prompting industrial action. Lufthansa, however, described the demands as financially unsustainable, citing the need to maintain cost discipline as it recovers from economic challenges.
The widespread disruptions have affected tens of thousands of passengers across the airline’s network, with some Nigerian travelers reporting missed appointments and financial losses due to the delays.
One affected passenger described the experience as chaotic, noting that travelers were left without clear guidance in the early stages of the disruption.
Another traveler criticized the handling of rebooked flights, claiming that some passengers were not provided accommodation despite being unable to leave the airport due to visa restrictions.
Reacting to the situation, the spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority of Nigeria, Michael Achimugu, confirmed that the authority had been informed of the strike. He explained that airlines are allowed to rebook affected passengers on other carriers or provide accommodation where necessary.
Amid the ongoing challenges, Lufthansa also announced plans to accelerate its restructuring, including withdrawing planes from its regional subsidiary, in a bid to deal with rising operating costs and labor tensions.
Under European Union aviation rules, passengers affected by significant cancellations or delays may be entitled to compensation, depending on the circumstances surrounding the disruption.
