Governor Seyi Makinde of the State of Oyo declared on Wednesday that the resignation of the former vice -president Atiku Abubakar of the Democratic Party of people (PDP) would not affect the party’s stability or performance.
Makinde made Akure’s observations while he spoke with journalists in an interview held in honor of Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, Akure’s Deji, who marks his tenth anniversary of coronation.
“Atiku’s exit will not dent on the PDP,” Makinde said. “The PDP is an institution. People are free to join or leave at any time.”
Atiku had previously announced his departure from the Adamawa PDP, triggering speculation on his potential impact on the party.
However, Makinde rejected these concerns and also minimized the threat of the African democratic congress (ADC), describing it as another party in search of electoral relevance.
During the event, which presented a lesson entitled “The role of the traditional institutions of Nigeria in the construction of the nation: impediments, impacts and perspectives”, Makinde underlined the meaning of traditional leadership in the development of Nigeria.
He described traditional sovereigns as “custodians of basic trust” and vital collaborators to the unity and stability of the country long before the modern governance structures existed.
“Traditional institutions are not relics,” said Makinde.
“They are traveling pillars of identity, legitimacy and cohesion. Ignore them in the construction efforts of the nation is an expensive error.”
By highlighting the efforts in Oyo’s state, the governor said that his administration has successfully integrated traditional institutions into his governance system, producing positive results.
“The construction of the nation does not concern the revenue of oil, but the strength of the institutions and their service to the people,” he said.
In his observations, Oba Aladelusi underlined the critical role of traditional sovereigns in national development and has asked for constitutional reforms to recognize them and strengthen them formally.
The monarch also praised the Akure unit and expressed gratitude to the state government and citizens for their continuous support for the building.
