Muslims end Ramadan on Thursday, celebrate Eid on Friday – Sultan

The Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar declared Eid-el-Fitr on Friday, March 20, 2026, following the failure to sight the Shawwal crescent moon across Nigeria.

The announcement, which marks the end of the 2026 Ramadan fast, was contained in a statement released on Wednesday by the Sultanate Council’s Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs in collaboration with the National Moon Sighting Committee.

According to the statement signed by the Wazirin Sokoto, Sambo Wali Junaidu, there are no verified reports of the new moon by the nationwide viewing committees on the 29th day of Ramadan, corresponding to March 18, 2026.

“In accordance with Islamic injunctions, when the new moon is not sighted on the 29th day of the lunar month, Muslims must complete 30 days of fasting,” the statement read.

He added that Thursday, March 19, 2026, will be observed as the 30th day of Ramadan, making Friday, March 20, 2026, the first day of Shawwal 1447AH and the day for the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr.

The Sultan, who is also the President General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs of Nigeria, urged Muslims to uphold the virtues acquired during Ramadan and continue to pray for the peace, unity and progress of the country.

He congratulated the Muslim faithful on the successful completion of the holy month and prayed for the acceptance of their acts of worship.

The statement also conveys the Sultan’s message of goodwill, wishing Muslims across Nigeria a peaceful and joyful celebration of Eid-el-Fitr.
