National Sports Festival 2026: FG approves major sports infrastructure projects for Enugu ahead of Coal City Games

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to deliver a successful and world-class National Sports Festival in 2026 by approving major sports infrastructure projects for Enugu State ahead of the much-awaited Coal City Games.

The Federal Government, through the NSC, has approved a series of strategic projects aimed at strengthening the readiness of Enugu State to host one of the largest multi-sports events in Nigeria.

Among the approved projects are:

the construction of an olympic swimming pool

renovation of the covered sports hall

rehabilitation of athletes’ hostels

and various supporting sports infrastructure developments across the state.

The projects are expected to significantly improve Enugu’s ability to host major national and international sporting competitions while creating lasting benefits for athlete development and youth participation.

One of the highlights is the construction of an Olympic-sized swimming pool, considered a major boost for the development of aquatic sports in Nigeria.

The facility is expected to provide better training opportunities for swimmers and position Enugu as a future destination for national and international aquatic competitions.

This development also comes at a time when Nigerian swimmers are increasingly gaining continental recognition and winning medals at major African championships.

The planned upgrade of the indoor sports hall will modernize facilities for several indoor sports, including:

basketball

volleyball

badminton

table tennis

handball

combat sports

and other multi-use indoor events.

According to the Commission, the renovation will improve the well-being of athletes, improve the experience of spectators and bring the facilities closer to international standards.

Another important aspect of the project is the rehabilitation of the athletes’ hostels, which is expected to improve the accommodation conditions of athletes and officials during competitions and training camps.

The upgraded hostels will also support long-term talent development programs and future sporting activities in the state.

The NSC further revealed that additional supporting infrastructure projects will strengthen Enugu’s sports ecosystem, increase grassroots participation, boost sports tourism and create employment opportunities for the youth.

The approvals reflect the federal government’s renewed commitment towards the renewal of sports infrastructure across the country under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE).

With preparations gaining momentum, Enugu State is now expected to become one of Nigeria’s major sports hubs as attention gradually shifts to the 2026 National Sports Festival, the Coal City Games.
