NDC youths in Gombe are urging the party to prioritize credibility when fielding its governorship candidate

A group, under the aegis of Concerned NDC Gombe Youths, has called on the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to prioritize a governorship candidate with credibility, strong grassroots structures and broad public trust as the party prepares for the 2027 elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Gombe on May 14, 2026, the group’s state chairman, Peter Emmanuel, said the choice of candidate will be crucial in mobilizing young voters and maintaining the party’s credibility in the state.

The group expressed concern over an aspirant who was once allegedly arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) due to his service record.

“We need a candidate who has no problems that opponents can exploit to de-campaign us.

“The NDC was founded on integrity, transparency and accountability and should field candidates who reflect those values and can connect with voters from neighborhood to state level,” he said.

He also advised the party to consider young aspirants in its lists, saying young people make up the majority of voters in Gombe and want leaders who are accessible and rooted in communities.

The group urged the party’s national leadership in Abuja to consider candidates with demonstrable grassroots support and a track record that inspires confidence, warning that ignoring youth concerns could weaken the party’s chances in 2027.

“We are not against any individual. Our concern is the future of the NDC and ensuring that we present a candidate who can win the public’s trust,” Emmanuel explained.
