NDLEA intercepts drugs imported from Canada, arrests suspects

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officers have intercepted 532 packages of Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis, weighing 265.25kg and imported from Montreal, Canada, at the Tincan Seaport in Lagos State.

The illicit drug contained in a black Toyota Sienna bus, one of three vehicles in a container from Canada, was intercepted by NDLEA officers at the port on Wednesday, August 7, 2024.

NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi made the announcement in a statement released on Sunday, August 11.

Babafemi said the seizure was made during a joint inspection with Nigerian Customs Service officials and other stakeholders.

Babafemi said that on Thursday, August 8, NDLEA officers recorded another seizure of 75 packages of the same substance, weighing 37.5 kg, in a container coming from Canada.

He noted that anti-drug agency officers on Thursday also arrested Joseph Peter, 49, with 425 compressed blocks of cannabis sativa weighing 291,200kg in his Toyota Camry in Adamawa State.

The NDLEA spokesperson said Peter claimed to have brought the consignment from Edo State to deliver it to Yola, Adamawa State.

He added that two suspects, Adekunle Sunday Adebayo, 50, and Yahaya Mamuda, 35, were arrested with 29.5kg of cannabis in Gadar Tamburawa area of ​​Kano State on Tuesday, August 6.

Babafemi further revealed that NDLEA operatives recovered 1,169 kilograms of cannabis from a bus along Orchid Road, Ajah area of ​​Lagos on Sunday, August 4.

He said that on Friday, August 9, 1,230.00kg of cannabis was destroyed on three hectares of farmland in Ikeje forest at Edimogo village, Igalamela/Odolu Local Government Area of ​​Kogi State by NDLEA officers supported by Nigerian Army troops, adding that the owner, Danjuma Maji, 40, was arrested.

Commending the anti-drug officers for the arrests and seizures, NDLEA Chairman/CEO Brigadier General Mohamed Marwa (retd.) urged them to continue with their current balanced approach to drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts.
