… Flame checkpoints, taxes, poor infrastructures
Daud Olatunji
The Nigeria governors forum has expressed deep concern for the persistent increase in food prices across the country, attributing the tendency to a proliferation of illegal places, unauthorized taxes and dilapidated transport infrastructure.
This was disclosed in a press release issued at the end of the third meeting of the forum held in Abuja on Wednesday 18 June 2025. The document was signed by the President of the NGF and the Governor of the State of Kwara, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and read by the governor of the State of Lagos, Babajide Sanwolu.
According to Sanwo-Oell, governors have resolved amply on key national issues, in particular those who undermine food security, national stability and economic recovery.
βThe forum received a briefing from the national security councilor, Nuhu Ribadu, accompanied by defense, agriculture, development of cattle and transport ministers.
The presentation revealed that the proliferation of checkpoints, illegal taxation and poor infrastructures are the main inflation drivers and food inefficiencies in the food supply chain, “said Sanwo-Oell.
He revealed that a high-level inter-ministerial committee had been formed to face the crisis and had already presented his recommendations to the forum.
“Governors recognized the urgency of the matter and expressed their willingness to work with the federal authorities to dismantle unauthorized checkpoints, harmonize withdrawals and facilitate the movement without obstacles of goods through state borders,” he added.
In addition to the challenges of the food offer, the forum has also discussed economic recovery efforts, with particular attention to the program for recovering actions and economic stimulus (NG-Cares) of Nigeria Covid-19.
Sanwo-Elimo revealed that governors expressed dissatisfaction for what they described as the inability of the World Bank to honor financing commitments within the first phase of the program, despite the substantial investments at state level.
“Governors expressed concern about the non-lightning of financing commitments by the Bank pursuant to the NG-Ces 1.0. They underlined the need for a friendly resolution between the World Bank and the participating states to conclude the first phase of the program before proceeding to NG-CES 2.0,” he said.
According to the presentation of the World Bank, over $ 2.2 billion have been invested by states through NG-CAS delivery platforms, directly affecting over 17 million Nigerians.
The second phase of the program should focus on the construction of long-term resilience for vulnerable families and micro-deferences.
The NGF has also decided to deepen its coordination with the federal authorities to eliminate obstacles to the food movement and guarantee responsibility in all forms of assistance for international development.
The meeting, which lasted in the early hours of Thursday, participated governors of Kwara, Oyo, Imo, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Osun and Plateau.
