First, there is a basic contradiction in the argument about wealth and identifying with ordinary Nigerians.

If someone has accumulated billions but deliberately presents himself as living modestly, using few clothes, owning very few personal items, or flying economy, people are entitled to ask what exactly that modesty is supposed to represent. Wealth itself is not the problem. But if the argument is about contentment and identification with the average Nigerian, then the entire picture has to be considered, not just the parts that fit the narrative.

The same principle should apply to the families of politicians.

If Nigerians questioned the expensive lifestyles or properties associated with the families of other political figures, then the same standard should apply when discussing the family of Peter Obi. His wife is an independent person with her own business and resources, and she is entitled to spend her money as she chooses. But if an item reportedly worth hundreds of millions of naira is being displayed publicly, it is reasonable to discuss the contrast between that lifestyle and the political message of identifying with ordinary Nigerians.

The issue is not whether she is legally entitled to own an expensive bag. Of course she is. The issue is whether we are applying the same standard to everyone.

That is where the hypocrisy becomes difficult to ignore.

When a member of another political family buys an expensive property, wears an expensive watch, carries an expensive bag, or lives an obviously luxurious lifestyle, many of the same people immediately ask questions about the source of the money and what it says about the politician.

So why should the standard suddenly change because the person involved belongs to a political camp we support?

And this principle should extend beyond Peter Obi and his family. It should apply to Tinubu, Atiku, Fayose, Fashola, Sanwo-Olu and every other politician and political family.

If we condemn ostentation when it comes from politicians we dislike, but defend exactly the same behaviour when it comes from politicians we support, then the problem is not the bag, the house, the watch or the shirt.

The problem is hypocrisy.

Political accountability cannot be selective. If we genuinely want a better society, we should be willing to apply the same standard to people on both sides of the political divide.

And perhaps comedians and skit makers should also remember that generating traffic is not the same thing as contributing meaningfully to public discourse. If the only reason to push a narrative is because it generates engagement or protects you from being "cancelled," then we should all be more willing to question the narrative rather than simply applaud it.
