OAP Dotun reacts after SA artist Tyla beats Tems, Davido, Ayra Starr to win Afrobeats award at 2024 VMAs

Nigerian media personality Oladotun Ojuolape Kayode popularly known as Dotun has taken to social media to react after South African artist Tyla beat Tems, Davido and Ayra Starr to win the Afrobeats category at the 2024 VMAs.

Tyla’s mega-hit “Water” beat out stiff competition from Ayra Starr’s “Last Heartbreak Song,” Chris Brown’s “Sensational” featuring Lojay and Davido, Usher’s “Ruin” featuring Pheelz, and Tems’ “Love Me Jeje,” among others, to win the Afrobeats category.

After winning the Afrobeats category, the South African singer decided to identify himself with the country’s Amapiano music during his acceptance speech at the 2024 VMAs.

“I realize that all African musicians are sometimes categorized as Afrobeats. African music is very diverse, although Afrobeats has taken over and opened up possibilities for us,” Tyla said.

“I’m from South Africa, and I represent Amapiano and my culture,” Tyla continued, before addressing fellow Afrobeats artists nominated alongside him, including Rema, Tems, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Wikzid, and Davido.

Reacting to the singer’s comments on her Instagram post, Dotun criticized Tyla on the platform for remarks she made during her acceptance speech that failed to acknowledge the breadth of African music beyond Afrobeats.

He wrote, “Auntie @tyla aka I’m not Afrobeats, I’m Amapiano. We’ve heard of you but your song “Water” isn’t amapiano either. If you feel you were categorized in the wrong category, you should return the award or denounce the nominee. You received an award that does not represent you or your voice from the statement you made.”

“Once again, you see why you “ESAUS” need to rethink. You all sold our human rights for a pittance. Afrobeat is Afrobeat not Afrobeats, hence the confusion…” he added.
