OBI cancels the air on the role of the Abacha era, says that the commitment was civic, non -political

The presidential candidate of the Labor Party in the General Elections of 2023, Peter Obi, has dispelled the statements that connect him to the notorious military regime of the deceased General Abacha, stating that his commitment under the junta was purely civil and non -political.

Obi, a former governor of the State of Ambra, had renewed criticism for the accusations that he was politically affiliated to the Adbacha administration, an era spoken by a massive corruption, violations of human rights and blocks on civil freedoms.

In a declaration published on his official management X on Wednesday, Obi clarified that his only commitment with the Abachach government was as a co -opted member of a task force established in 1996 to decongest the Apapa port in Lagos.

Obi shared a letter dated 24 April 1996, signed by the then Minister of Finance, Abu Gidado, who called him and Edwin Okeke as members of the Task Force of decongestion of the port. The letter was addressed to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Lagos.

By explaining the context of the appointment, Obi said: “Our meeting with General Abachac was born from collective concern as traders and importers for prolonged delays in compensation for goods in ports.

“We approached him not as political actors, but as citizens interested in the search for pragmatic solutions for a question that influence the economic activity and the means of subsistence”.

He claimed that the move was motivated by civic responsibility and had nothing to do with partisan politics or loyalty to the military regime.

“As I said during my interview on the weekend and I constantly maintained, I had never met General Sani Abacha before that meeting.

Our intention was to support efficiency and propose practical steps to restore normality in port operations for the benefit of the wider entrepreneurial community and, ultimately, of the Nigerian economy, “he said.

Obi also added that although he did not expect his explanation to silence the critics, he considered it necessary to publicly clarify the question in the spirit of transparency and responsibility.

“This clarification is offered in the interest of the truth, to reaffirm that our actions have been guided exclusively by a sense of civil duty and not by political ambition,” he said.

“I do not expect this copiosa proves to bury the Abacha case because the malice producers have further reasons. But it is placed in the public space for posterity and in line with my commitment to transparency to the Nigerians on any question in which I am involved.”

The clarification of OBI comes in the midst of a renewed control of the roles of the public characters during the previous military regimes of Nigeria, in particular since the debates on the responsibility of the leadership and the national memory continue to dominate the political landscape.
