Victor Osimhen etched his name in history by securing the 8th position in 2023 the Ballon d’Or rankings.

This remarkable accomplishment took place during the Ballon d’Or ceremony held in France on Monday.

Osimhen’s achievement also carries the distinction of being the first Nigerian to break into the top 10.

According to journalist Giuseppe Pastore, this achievement not only marks a significant milestone for Osimhen but is also the best result ever for a Napoli player.

The previous record was held by Ruud Krol, who finished 15th in the Ballon d’Or rankings back in 1980.

Osimhen’s contributions were pivotal to Napoli’s success, as he emerged as the top scorer in the 2022-23 Serie A season with an impressive 26 goals in 32 appearances.

Moreover, Napoli reached the Champions League quarter-finals, a historic achievement for the club in Europe’s premier competition.

Osimhen’s outstanding performance in the Champions League, coupled with his individual accolades and Napoli’s success, led to his inclusion in the prestigious top 10 of the Ballon d’Or.

This placement at the Ballon d’Or ceremony further bolsters Osimhen’s chances in the race for the CAF African Footballer of the Year award.

The last Nigerian to win the award is Kanu Nwankwo in 1999. Although John Mikel Obi came close in 2013.

Osimhen’s compatriot Asisat Oshoala, also had a notable finish in 20th place in the women’s category.
