The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum on Wednesday urged the Federal Government and unions to consider the ability of states and local governments to pay the new minimum wage in their negotiations.
The governors made the call in a communique issued at the end of their meeting in Enugu and read by the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed.
President Bola Tinubu will meet with trade union leaders on the new minimum wage on Thursday in Abuja.
The federal government has proposed N62,000 as the minimum wage for workers in the country while the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are pushing for N250,000 due to the current realities in the country.
Mohammed noted that the minimum wage negotiations had become so protracted due to the unprecedented hardship in the country.
He stressed that the parties must consider the ability of governments at all levels to pay minimum wages.
He said: βThe workersβ demands for a substantial wage increase are very reasonable and therefore need to receive proper support from the forum.
βWhile negotiations are ongoing, we urge all parties to refrain from making statements and taking actions that could lead to the breakdown of law and order and ultimately lead to economic collapse.β
