The Rivers State Police Command has announced the dismissal of three officers over the killing of a man, Anthony Obodo along with Ada George in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Another member of the team, an inspector, who was reportedly absconding after the killing, has been declared a deserter, as the commando said that efforts are on to arrest him.
The State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, made the announcement on Wednesday while parading the three officers in Port Harcourt.
On Thursday last week, a police team reportedly flagged down the late Obodo at the Ada George junction in Agip junction, but one of them identified as Corporal Louis allegedly fired three shots killing Anthony alleging that he refused to stop.
Adepoju said: “I am here to provide an update on some of the serious incidents recently recorded in the state, including the investigation into the death of student Anthony A. Obodo ‘Boy’, following an unfortunate police chase and shooting incident, as well as the arrest of suspected members of a one-time robbery syndicate operating in Port Harcourt and its environs.
“Let me state clearly that the Rivers State Police Command places utmost importance on professionalism, accountability, respect for human rights and protection of lives and property.
“If there are allegations of misconduct or criminality against police personnel, we will not protect any officer found to have committed unlawful acts under my supervision. As a result, the patrol team gave chase.

“During the chase, Corporal Alfred Louis who was part of the patrol team opened fire at the vehicle and the bullet hit the driver identified as Anthony A. Obodo.”M” who suffered a gunshot wound.
The victim was immediately rushed to Palmer Hospital, Port Harcourt, where he was treated and later confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.
He said efforts were also intensified to locate and arrest Inspector Solomon Nworgu, who was reportedly absconding after the incident.
Adepoju said: “Following the conclusion of the investigation and determination of the culpability of the officers involved. Regarding the incident involving the death of Anthony A. Obodo, I understand the concerns of his family and members of the community.
“The Command has taken appropriate disciplinary action against the police personnel involved and the officers paraded today have been dismissed from the Nigerian Police and will be charged to court.”
The state police chief said the disciplinary action demonstrated the position of the command under his supervision that misconduct, abuse of office, excessive use of power and violation of law by police personnel will not be tolerated.
