Protests against hardships turn violent in Nyanya, Abuja

A protest against economic hardship and hunger in Nyanya, Abuja, on Thursday, August 1, turned violent when some people hijacked the demonstration, leading to clashes with the Nigerian Army.

Initially, protesters gathered at Nyanya Bridge were peaceful and voiced concerns about the country’s economic situation. However, tensions escalated when a faction began vandalizing public property, including street lights, and throwing stones at soldiers.

Soldiers deployed to restore order faced resistance from aggressive protesters. The situation quickly turned chaotic, with many people running for safety.

Amid the unrest, some protesters were heard shouting “Bamayi” (meaning “We are not interested anymore”). It remains unclear whether these people were part of the original protest group or had infiltrated with different motives.
