The People’s Redemption Party (PRP) in Bauchi State has warned the newly-appointed local government chairmen to prioritise transparency and accountability in their financial dealings.
The party expressed concern about the way the chairmen gained power, saying the election was marred by widespread fraud and irregularities.
“We urge them to prioritize transparency and accountability in their financial affairs,” said His Excellency Abdulazeez Haruna, PRP State Secretary. “They should not hand over their local government grants and money to any state government or individual, regardless of their position or influence.”
The PRP reminded the leaders that the Supreme Court ruling has given full autonomy, including financial autonomy, to local governments. “They have no reason to depend on anyone or act as stooges by handing over their local government funds,” Haruna said.

The party warned party leaders not to give in to any pressure or temptation to embezzle or misuse funds meant for the development of their regions.
“We will monitor their actions closely and will not hesitate to take the necessary steps to ensure that they carry out their responsibilities and are held accountable for their actions,” Haruna said.
PRP urged leaders to prioritize the needs of their constituents and work towards realizing democratic outcomes. “They must remember that they will be held accountable for their actions before the Commission for the Eradication of Economic and Financial Crimes (KPK), the people in their local government areas, and ultimately before God,” Haruna said.
The party’s warning comes as the newly-appointed chairmen are about to take office amid concerns about their legitimacy and ability to govern well. The PRP’s warning is seen as a timely reminder for the chairmen to put the interests of their constituents first and uphold the principles of transparency and accountability.
