PSC suspended 4 senior officers, sanctioned 31 others

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has suspended four senior police officers and sanctioned 31 others for various offences.

The commission in a statement on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Torty Njoku Kalu, said the affected officers would be subject to sanctions after being found guilty of serious misconduct, including gross misconduct, unprofessional behavior and conduct deemed unbecoming of a public officer.

According to the statement, the decision was taken at the plenary session of the commission held in Abuja.

In addition to the dismissal of four officers, the PSC also approved a series of disciplinary actions affecting several personnel including the demotion of 10 officers.

Two others were compulsorily retired, three received warning letters, and seven officers were cleared of all charges.

“In addition to the firings, the commission approved a series of disciplinary actions that impacted multiple officers,” a PSC spokesperson said.

“Ten high-ranking officers were reduced in rank, three Police Inspectors were demoted to Deputy Police Inspectors, two Deputy Police Inspectors became Assistant Police Inspectors, and five Assistant Police Inspectors became Inspectors. Two officers were also compulsorily retired in the public interest.

“Other sanctions include a strong warning to ten officers, a warning to five officers, a warning letter to three officers, and a warning letter to one officer. Apart from that, seven officers were acquitted and found guilty.”

Reacting to the results, PSC Chairman Hashimu Salihu Argungu stressed that the commission remained committed to enforcing discipline in the Nigerian Police.

Argungu said the commission would continue to ensure that acts of indiscipline and misconduct were appropriately sanctioned, adding that professionalism and accountability would remain central to its oversight of the police.
