The death of Alex Ekubo reminds me of —Actor, Uzor Arukwe

Actor Uzor Arukwe says the death of his colleague, Alex Ekubo humbled him and reminded him of certain truths.

According to him, “Listening to stories from people who knew him better, I felt humbled. It reminded me that in the end, people will not only remember our talents or achievements. They will remember our kindness. They will remember how we treat others. They will remember our passion.”

Arukwe recalled meeting Ekubo, who died on May 11, 2026, after battling metastatic kidney cancer, on the set of Dabby Chimere.

He described Ekubo as warm, accommodating and very polite as people say.

The actor said that hearing stories from people who knew Ekubo made him feel more humble.

According to him, it reminds him that people are remembered not only for their talents or achievements, but also for their kindness, the way they treat others, and their enthusiasm.

He explained that silence was his first response because sadness also comes with silence.

Arukwe wrote, “I kept quiet. And I know some people wonder why I didn’t post, why I didn’t say anything, why there were no pictures, no captions, no public display of sadness.

“Actually, I don’t know what to say. Some disadvantages don’t meet you online first; they sit with you quietly. They make you shake your head and say, “Ma’am…not this person. Not Alex.” You replay the memories and hope someone will call to say something went wrong.

“I met Alex Ikenna Ekubo on the set of Dabby Chimere. From day one, he was warm, accommodating and he was the gentleman that people describe him to be. No noise. No atmosphere. Just a genuinely nice guy.

“So silence is the first thing I respond to the news of your death, because grief comes with silence too. Not every farewell needs a post. Some are carried in prayer. Some are carried in memories. There are also those which are carried in the heart.

“Alex… Ikuku. Daalụ. For your warmth. For your grace. For the example you left behind. Nọdụ n’udo. We will hold the fort on this side until we meet again. Good journey, ezigbo nwoke”.
