The head of the army staff, the lieutenant general Olufemi Oluyede, has raised concern about the inability of the Nigerian army to provide housing for about 13,000 new recruits that should join forces this year.
Oluyede, who spoke to Abuja on Thursday during a supervision visit of the Senate Committee for the Army, attributed the challenge to the limits of the current “envelope budget system”, which described as inadequate for the operational and well -being of the army.
He said the military were too tight in terms of infrastructure and warned that the inability to provide refuge for troops represents a serious threat to operational efficiency and national security.
“Only this year, we expect about 13,000 new staff members, but there are no corresponding resources to provide accommodation for them,” said Oluyede. “We still have soldiers who are not hosted and that number will continue to grow.”
He added: “We are not only competing for internal insecurity. What happens if we are challenged from the outside? The well -being of our staff, including the refuge, is fundamental”.
The head of the army invited the National Assembly to push for special funding outside the budget structure of the restrictive envelope, which claimed to not be able to respond to the unique and expansive needs of the armed forces.
The president of the Senate Committee for the Army, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, admitted that the financing model was failing the army and undertaken to legislative support to increase the assignment of the army budget.
“The Nigerian army and the armed forces should be removed from the budget system of the envelope,” he said. “They need more funds to meet realities on the field. We saw these needs firsthand during our supervision visits.”
Yar’adua said the committee was divided into two teams to inspect the army formations through the states of Borno, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi and Lagos to evaluate the budget performance and military infrastructures.
He assured the head of the army of the commitment of the National Assembly to push for the financial reforms that would allow the army to work more effectively.
