The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially asked its South African counterpart to take necessary steps to protect the lives and property of Nigerians and other foreign nationals in the country.
The call was made in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
It contained, among other things, “Nigeria recalls the recent attacks on foreign nationals in several major cities in South Africa.
“As a fraternal nation, Nigeria wishes to use this occasion of the commemoration of Independence Day to call on the Government of South Africa to protect the lives and property of foreigners from fellow African countries currently residing in their country.
“Nigeria remains confident that the enduring partnership between the two countries will continue to contribute to peace, stability and sustainable development across the African continent.
“The government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria extend their best wishes to the government and people of South Africa for continued unity, progress and prosperity,” the statement read.
The report notes that Nigeria and South Africa have deep historical ties rooted in the anti-apartheid struggle and have since built strong bilateral relations that include trade, defence, education and cultural exchanges, as well as cooperation within the African Union and the United Nations.

The report also highlights ongoing collaboration through frameworks such as the Bi-National Commission, while emphasizing the importance of continental unity and collective progress.
Congratulating South Africa on its Independence Day, Nigeria said the event marked the historic democratic elections of 1994 that ended apartheid and ushered in majority rule.
The statement added that the 2026 celebrations reflect 32 years of democratic rule and the country’s commitment to constitutionalism, the rule of law, equality and human dignity.
“On this auspicious occasion, Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to further strengthen bilateral relations with South Africa and deepen cooperation in strategic sectors for the mutual benefit of both countries,” the statement said.
The call comes amid new attacks on foreign nationals and businesses in South Africa by mobs and crowds asking them to leave their country.
