The Senate confirmed Joseph Tegbe as minister of electric power

The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Joseph Tegbe as Minister of Power.

This follows its success in screening the film at the plenary session.

During extensive deliberations conducted by the Senate Committee of the Whole, the lawmakers noted that installed electricity generation in Nigeria exceeds 13,000MW but actual supply rarely exceeds 4,500MW as transmission and distribution systems remain weak.

In his response to a question regarding the electricity crisis in Nigeria, Tegbe expressed confidence that real improvements would occur within three to six months.

He said President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian people expected measurable progress and promised immediate reforms that would address long-standing electricity challenges.

He promised the Nigerian people and the Senate that his term in office would produce real progress capable of transforming the power sector.

“My promise to Nigerians and this chamber is that Nigerians will see real improvements in this sector,” he said.

Tegbe said he would strengthen collaboration between the Ministry of Power, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and stakeholders.

He emphasized that the electricity crisis in Nigeria is not only caused by technical failures, but also includes governance, capitalization, sustainability, gas supply and commercial inefficiencies.

He described repeated collapses of the power grid as evidence of weak transmission systems, aging infrastructure, unstable frequency control and inadequate regulatory enforcement.

In his remarks, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio urged Tegbe to avoid bureaucratic pitfalls and prioritize long-term solutions over a contract-based maintenance culture.

He stressed that stable electricity remains critical to Nigeria’s industrialization, national security, economic growth and development aspirations.

The Senate President also condemned exploitative billing by DSTV and electricity providers.

He questioned why Nigerians were paying for unused services while overseas consumers enjoyed a pay-as-you-go system without unfair deductions.
