The Senate confirmed Umar as chairman of the NMDPRA

lThe Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Rabiu Umar as Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

This confirmation follows the presentation and consideration of the report of the joint Senate Committee on Downstream Oil and Gas at a plenary session in Abuja.

Committee Chairman Abdulrahman Kawu said the nominations were in accordance with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

Kawu said the candidate has the technical competence, experience and professional knowledge required for the position.

He added that no petition was received against Umar’s candidacy during the screening process.

He said the joint committee approved the nominee after reviewing the credentials, records and other relevant documents presented before lawmakers during the confirmation process.

The committee then recommended that the Senate confirm Umar as Chief Executive of NMDPRA.

The Senate, sitting as a Committee of the Whole, considered the report and formally confirmed his nomination.

The upper house of the legislature also confirmed the appointment of Francis Asogwah as commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission (NLRC).

Likewise, the Senate confirmed seven candidates as commissioners of the National Population Commission representing various states across the country.

Those confirmed are Kolawole Alabi from Ekiti, Nasiru Muazu from Zamfara, and Usman Tuga from Bauchi State.

Others confirmed by the Senate are Isiaka Yahaya of Kwara, Sadiq Rada of Katsina, Suleiman Umar of Jigawa, and Chiso Datijo of Sokoto State.
