President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an additional six-month term for the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, extending his tenure beyond the end of his current term.
The extension was announced in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, who explained that Adeniyi’s term of office is currently scheduled to end on August 1, 2026.
According to the Presidency, this decision aims to enable the head of Customs to complete important ongoing reforms in the service and oversee a smooth leadership transition process.
“The six-month extension, which will end in February 2027, is aimed at enabling it to consolidate implementation of the National Single Window and ensure the smooth running of services,” he said.
The statement further noted that Adeniyi will use the extended time to liaise with the governing board of the Nigeria Customs Service on personnel matters critical to the agency’s operations.

“During the transition period, Adeniyi, in collaboration with the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) Council, will ensure the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and mandatory retirement for officers who have attained the age of 60 years or have served 35 years,” the statement added.
Adeniyi’s career in the Customs Service spanned several decades. He joined the agency shortly after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and steadily rose through the ranks.
His development saw him reach the position of Deputy Financial Comptroller in 2012 before being appointed Financial Comptroller in 2017. In 2020, he became Assistant General Financial Comptroller and then appointed Acting Deputy Comptroller General in January 2023.
His promotion came in June 2023 when President Tinubu appointed him Comptroller General of Customs, a position he will now continue to hold until February 2027 based on the latest extension approved by the President.
