Former youth international striker Tosin Dosunmu (aka Sinker) has revealed his growing admiration for one of his charges, 23-year-old Rafiu Durosinmi, who is currently making waves with Belgium’s RKC Genk, where he joined in July from Italy’s Pisa, Sports2347 reports.
Dosunmu, who played for First Bank FC in Lagos, before shining in Belgium with Molenbeek, Dender, Mechelen and Westerlo, as well as in the Austrian Bundesliga with Austria Wien, said he is delighted that Durosinmi is being compared to Victor Osimhen.
With Durosinmi currently on fire in the Jupiler League, the former MFK Karviná and FC Viktoria Plzeň hitman of the Czech Republic, who joined Pisa in January, will surely add more international caps to the Super Eagles’ debut that came in May during the Unity Cup 2026.
This has given further cause for high expectations from Dosunmu, who was part of Nigeria’s historic Golden Eaglets’ winning team at the 1997 UEFA/CAF Meridian in Portugal, but later earned just one cap for the Super Eagles, despite constantly making headlines in Europe.
Dosunmu, a dark-skinned, light-footed lad who grew up in the Oshodi area of Lagos, soon returned to Belgium to perform at Germinal Beerschot, Zulte Waregem and Royal Antwerp, with stints at France’s Nancy, Nerthanlnds’ MVV Maasttricht and Sint-Niklaas in between.
He is now making the case for Dorusinmi to gain better attributes than him, as the youngster has made an impressive start to his first season at Genk, climbing to the top of the Belgian Pro League goalscoring log with five goals, including a crucial equalizer against current leaders Gent.
With the striker having shown great form in his first six league games, he has already established himself as an important player for Genk, but Dosunmu emphatically stated that there is more to come from his protégé, especially with aerial ability as his most notable asset.
Dosunmu told Het Nieuwsblad: Rafiu sometimes reminds me a little of Victor Osimhen, with the difference that he is actually very strong in the air. As for his physical condition, he is not yet at the best level (but he is very promising).
“The understanding with his teammates still needs to develop a little (and will improve as the season progresses). On the first day he already surprised me with what he showed after just ten days of training.”
