The International Spotlight is in Nigeria this week as both the United Kingdom and the FBI increase the efforts to face serious crimes, with significant operations aimed at immigration violations and online extortion scams.
In a move coordinated by the United Kingdom authorities, 43 people have been deported to Nigeria and Ghana, marking an important step in the underlying repression of the United Kingdom on illegal immigration.
A declaration issued by the United Kingdom Interior Ministry and the Foreign Office, Commonwealth and Development (FCDO) confirmed the deportation of these transgressors, including 15 bankrupt asylum seekers and 11 foreign national criminals who had completed their sentences in prison.
Although the exact dates of the deportations remain not disclosed, the operation highlights the continuous efforts of the UK government to manage its challenges on immigration.
The government of Prime Minister Keir Starmer supervised several deportation flights, with the latest people who sent 43 people to Nigeria and Ghana.
The deportations are part of the largest strategy to curb illegal immigration following the unveiling of the controversial migration agreement of the United Kingdom, which has been declared illegal by the UK Supreme Court in 2023.
Angela Eagle, Minister of the United Kingdom for the safety of borders and kindergarten, expressed gratitude to the governments of Nigeria and Ghana for their collaboration, underlining that the move reflects a strong international collaboration on immigration issues.
According to the government of the United Kingdom, over 24,000 people have only been expelled in the last year, a significant 11% increase compared to the previous year.
On the other side of the Atlantic, the FBI has made great strides in a global operation aimed at the Nigerian sixth unions that devastated the lives of American teenagers.
An FBI report revealed that 22 Nigerians were arrested for their roles in the far teenage guys, some of whom tragically took their lives in response to torment.
According to reports, these individuals were part of a wider network that operated globally, with perpetrators posing as young women on social media platforms to attract victims in sharing explicit content.
Once the victims sent compromising images, the scammers required payments, often in the form of gift cards, cryptocurrency or mobile payments, threatening to expose the material if their requests were not satisfied.
The INFBI investigation, nicknamed “Operation Artemis”, revealed a disturbing wave of sixth cases, with an increase of 30% of the accidents reported since October 2024 in March 2025, compared to the previous year.
The FBI internet crime (IC3) complaint center recorded over 54,000 victims in 2024, compared to 34,000 in 2023 and almost $ 65 million in financial losses linked to these crimes.
Alarmingly, the victims of this disturbing trend are mainly young people aged between 14 and 17 and more than 20 minors died of suicide due to extortion.
The FBI has connected many of these cases directly to the Nigerian agents. During the Artemis operation, several Nigerian suspicions were extradited to the United States, including a man who faced accusations related to the death of a teenager from the South Carolina.
The director of the FBI Kash Patel praised the international context of the operation, underlining the importance of global cooperation in the struggle with these atrocious crimes.
“This operation highlights the fundamental need for international cooperation to face this growing threat, and it is a struggle that we cannot face without our esteemed partners all over the world,” he said.
Both the united kingdom deportation effort and the repression of the FBI on the sixths reflect a growing recognition of the need for solid international collaboration to face complex and dangerous criminal activities.
With multiple expected arrests and the continuous effort to safeguard vulnerable populations, these operations underline the importance of global cooperation in facing the crime at its roots.
