University dismisses 2 senior staff, SUG president for blackmailing students

The management of the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has suspended two senior staff members and the President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) over alleged illegal collection of money from students.

The affected officials are Olanrewaju Ogunjobi, Director of the Directorate of Educational Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Banji Rildwan Olaleye, Deputy Dean for Student Affairs and Support Services; and James Iyanuoluwa Adio, President of SUG.

According to the university registrar, Mufutau Ibrahim, Ogunjobi and Olaleye were accused of collecting ₦1,000 from each first year student for practical classes conducted by the directorate without approval from the university management.

The registrar said the university formed an investigative committee to look into the allegations and ensure justice.

The committee reportedly found that Ogunjobi approved and collected the money without obtaining approval from the university management or the Senate.

It was also stated that the funds were not processed through university scholarships as required by regulations.

Olaleye was accused of helping collect the money despite his role in the student affairs department.

The committee also accused Adio, the SUG President, of being indirectly involved in the matter.

According to the report, he participated in the initial distribution of the money and later asked for a refund, which led to a transfer of ₦700,000 to his personal bank account.

The university said the three officials’ actions conflict with its efforts to promote transparency and accountability.

FUOYE management emphasizes that they will not tolerate student extortion, abuse of office, financial misconduct, or any actions that could damage the institution’s reputation.

The suspended officials are expected to face further administrative proceedings while the university continues its investigation.
