Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) President Musa Kida has expressed satisfaction with the performance of the women’s basketball team, D’Tigress at the Olympics.
The Nigerian women’s basketball team, led by coach Rena Wakama, defeated the world’s top basketball teams at the just-concluded Olympic Games in Paris.
The D’Tigress beat Australia in their opening match, lost to hosts France and beat Canada in their three group games before losing in the quarter-finals against the USA.
In an interview on TV, Kida said he stopped board members from forcing players on coach Wakama, and that played a key role in the team’s success at the Olympics.
“The responsibility is that we have tried to isolate the other board members from the influence, the board members can propose, they can put in names like everyone else, but the final selection of the team is in the hands of the coach and the technical crew,” Kida said.

Wakama was awarded the best coach for basketball at the Olympics, and Kida described him as a visionary who has proven critics wrong with his achievements.
“We are so proud of his dedication, commitment and patience in trying to do the right thing. It wasn’t easy.
“Coach Rena Wakama, we know you have sacrificed a lot. We know you have to be tolerant and understand the Nigerian context and give the team spirit, give the players a lot of confidence and show leadership,” he said.
Kida added: “It was the toughest group and we were not expected to survive at all, but then again I always said my girls would always surprise the world,” he said.
“It reminds me of 2018 when our women went to the FIBA World Cup in Geneva and we also made it to the quarterfinals and unfortunately we were cut from the American team.”
