WORLD CUP: Sadiq Umar, says he may retire from Super Eagles soon

Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar lamented Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, revealing that he may soon retire from the country’s national team squad.

The Valencia forward said he had not yet made a final decision but planned to evaluate his future when the club’s new season begins.

Speaking to Radio France Internationale Hausa, the 29-year-old explained that his choice will be guided by what is best for his career and long-term fitness.

“I am considering retiring from the Nigerian national team, but I will take the final decision when the new season starts,” said Umar.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s World Cup disappointment, the striker admitted the setback was painful but insisted it was time to look forward.

“I can’t specifically identify the reason for our failure, but it’s in the past. We have to focus on the next World Cup, which is four years away.”

Umar also answered questions regarding his recent absence from the national team, and dismissed suggestions that there was any negative impact on the coaching staff.

“Maybe my profile doesn’t match what they need right now. There are other players who are performing well because Nigeria is blessed with enormous talent,” he explained.

The former Almeria striker emphasized that his age is not the main problem, but rather the need to be careful in managing the next stage of his career.

“I want to think carefully about what will help me focus on my career and stay in football for a long time, like Cristiano Ronaldo.”

His comments are expected to spark fresh debate about the future of the Super Eagles as the team looks to rebuild after a painful World Cup qualifying campaign.
